Mount Doom - Three Creeks

Distance:  27 miles

Climbing:  95 feet per mile

 

​Description:  A pleasant ride for the most part through very rural sections of Nelson County, it includes a steep, somewhat technical descent after a long, moderate climb over what is affectionately called Mount Doom.  The route fords several small creeks in the middle section between miles 15 and 18.

Stores:  Mile 12 (uncertain hours).

Alerts: 

1.  Descent at mile 7 is steep and fast.  Use caution.

From Charlottesville (I-64), take 29 South approximately 18 miles. Turn left on Irish Road (Route 6) for 5 miles, then right on Schuyler Road (Route 800) for 1 mile, then left on Howardsville Turnpike (Route 602) for 2 miles, then right on Rockfish Crossing (Route 722). Continue 1.5 miles to the old Salem Church on the right.
