Rockfish Valley - Schuyler
Distance: 46 miles
Climbing: 85 feet per mile
Description: This fairly hilly ride makes a broad loop through western Albemarle and eastern Nelson counties with good views of the mountains during the first half. It includes 5 miles of very busy highway (see below) but otherwise is on quiet and scenic rural roads. Between miles 21 and 26 the route parallels the Rockfish River on one of the flattest stretches of road in the area, then climbs up to the village of Schuyler before finishing with 15 miles of rolling terrain back to the starting point.
Note: Because the traffic on Routes 151 & 6 (see below) has become steadily busier over recent years, we no longer recommend this route except for experienced riders. The Schuyler - Rockfish route is the official replacement for this one.
Stores: Mile 0 (Crossroads); mile 30 (Schuyler)
Alerts:
1. Steep, moderately technical descent with possible gravel on Burnt Mountain Road at mile 6.
2. The 5 miles (from mile 13.6 to mile 18.9) on Routes 151 & 6 have heavy, fast traffic with frequent trucks; the road is wide with good visibility.
3. There is a quarter-mile stretch on US 29 at mile 20; use caution.
Starting Point:
Crossroads Store
4916 Plank Rd
North Garden, VA 22959
